Best Coffee Grinders For French Press

I’ve always heard about French Press but have never tasted it up until few weeks ago.

My Jack stopped on his way home from work and bought two cups of French Press coffee which he brought home for us to sample.

I need a new coffee grinder to grind the beans so that I can make some French Press coffee for Jack and myself.

It is awesome to learn more and more tactics about different types of French Press brewing!

( That is another day's story! I promise you, I will write about that after a while. )

However, after we sip more French Press coffee, then we decided to share with family and friends.

This is completely new adventure with some home coffee grinders that I already used.

And some of those I need to know more.

So let’s start.

Is French Press Popular?

The French Press Coffee that our taste buds are about to experience is popular amongst regular avid coffee lovers like us.

Many of them drink it more than once or twice a week.

Let me tell you the experiences my friends have shared with us.

A brew such as this could change your life.

How French Press Makes
Better Coffee?

The idea of a plunger pot for French Press was invented in France in the 1800s according to craftbeveragejobs.com and illy.com.

There is also a controversy between the French and the Italians surrounding the history of the French Press.

I personally take the side of the French as the drink is named French Press.

The reason French Press makes different coffee, is the way in which it is brewed.

How French Press Works?

I  just pick up my fresh French Press pot.

I open the top and pull the plunger up to the top for maximum pressure on my coffee beans.

Then I pour a half cup of fresh coffee grounds into the pot.

Now I need to pour hot water to cover my beans but do not to fill the pot.

Remember, pressure is needed to brew the drink.

I press down steadily until the plunger stops at 1mm above the grounds.

My wait for the best taste comes within 3 to 4 minutes.

Then I continue to the bottom of the pot.

Mmmm, the smell of my French Coffee is totally irresistible!

What Kind Of Coffee Grounders You Need For French Press?

The best kind of coffee grounds for French Press is medium sized. You can also use the coarse size grounds for if you want.

Many grinders allow medium or coarse grounds. You can pick one for French Press.

A few of the coffee grinders we used and found suitable for French Press are: Cuisinart, Capresso, Baratza Encore, KitchenAid and Bodum BISTRO.

There are variety of grinders which grind either medium or coarse grind.

Turn the grinder setting to medium and the grounds will give the great taste.

How to Identify A French Press Grinder? (That Suits Your Lifestyle)

Grind Size

Many people overlook this matter on their early stage while making french press.

The size of the coffee grind is very important!

It is not a French Press if the grind size is any other than medium or coarse.

Your grinder must allow you to grind your coffee beans to medium size.

Otherwise, it is useless!

Method

Do you think - all the grinding methods are same for all sort of coffee drinks?

Of course not!

Your grinding method is as important as using the french press pot in a right way.

These two are vital points for the perfect taste!

Use your burr grinder properly and grind your coarse just before you need it.

Many people make a mistake of using pre-ground beans.

Metal

A grinder with metal parts prevents static clinging of coffee grounds.

All the grounds process through the grinder makes no waste of my coffee beans.

I love to have every bean ground.

Conical Burrs

A grinder with conical burrs give the best grind possible.

I never care for blade grinding due to lack of consistency in the grind.

On the other hand, a flat burr is a good choice, but not the best.

Therefore, I prefer a grinder with conical burrs.

Speed

It is important for the grinder to grind at a speed that not leave me tapping my foot with impatience.

You never like waiting too long for a cup of coffee, right?

Why A Perfect Grinder Is Important For French Press?

There are many hacks that you can grind your coffee without a perfect grinder. And that is okay for some other types of coffee!

For french press, you must need a clean and fresh perfect coffee grinder

As a desired perfect grinder gives coffee fanatics (like Jack and me) many cups of pleasure.

For french press, whenever the coffee beans are well ground the taste is superb.

The way the French designed the French Press, we cannot just throw any kind of grounds that in and brew.

Freshly Ground Coffee Is the Best Coffee

The tantalizing aroma in the air with the freshly ground coffee cannot be resisted. It gives me a feeling of comfort.

Freshly ground coffee also gives the feeling of being in the country fields where the coffee bean was grown.

This is the reason why my family prefers freshly ground coffee.

Learn my guide to keep your coffee bean fresh for long

Can You Use Any Coffee Brewer You Want?

Many coffee experts think, this is not a good idea. French Press is the keywords in this process.

Using any coffee brewer you want will not give the desired taste.

I do not want to be disappointed so I will use the correct French Press that was designed in France.

The Power to Brew Better Coffee With A French Press

When I use my French Press Pot for brewing french press coffee, it gives the desired taste and most of the time Jack asks for another cup or two.

I love more than willing to press more for him using the French Press brewer.

As I like to do things the right way.

What Features To Consider Before Buying A French Press Grinder?

There are many features to consider when buying a coffee grinder for French Press.

My first feature to consider would be the size of the bean hopper.

Then there would be others like the material the entire grinder is made from.

The speed at which it grinds, the setting sizes, the consistency of the grind and the ability of the grinder the stand firmly in place while grinding.

Consistency

This is of importance to taste.

The French Press coffee must have the right taste for it to be called French Press.

If the coffee grounds that are placed in the brewer are consistently medium without variation, it will brew the right taste.

The grounds should have one size.

Cleanliness

I surely buy a grinder that does not have static grounds after a grind.

It must also be easy to clean with a brush and warm water.

Most grinders with metal burrs are easy to clean so I will keep that in mind.

Having a clean set of burrs before each grind is the best way to maintain the fresh taste of coffee.

Sound

A small whirring sound will not be any problem in my home. I do not want the sound of a construction machine inside my home.

A coffee grinder should grind coffee beans quietly enough and efficiently.

I will listen well when I shop for a coffee grinder for French Press.

Cost Facts

The cost of the coffee grinder must be equal to the quality of the coffee grinder.

If the grinder is the best for French press, is durable and has a good warranty, then the price will not be a problem.

Sometimes when we pay too little for a coffee grinder, we get what we pay for.

What to Find in an Ideal Coffee Grinder for French Press?

There are many coffee grinders that can be used for French Press.

It is just that I am choosy and have always shopped around before making a buy.

This will give me the expected grounds to put in the pot for French Press.

Capacity

A coffee grinder must have a large enough bean hopper for me to be interested in it.

I would like at least a 16-ounce bean hopper so that I can press enough coffee grounds.

The coffee ground collector must also hold enough grounds in order to reduce the time spent grinding coffee beans.

Manual vs Electric Coffee Grinder

It is not so much of manual versus electric as it is the environment.

If you are in the outdoors then a manual grinder will be suitable.

However, if you are in your modern home then an electric grinder would be best.

For my needs, I would prefer an electric grinder as we will be having French Press coffee at home.

Blade vs Burr Coffee Grinder

For me, I always use a burr grinder. A blade grinder may not give the consistency that is best for a French Press pot.

The burr grinder gives the size and consistency that I desire on every grind. It is a matter of personal choice.

You may like to use a blade grinder to chop your coffee beans.

Which Coffee Mill Do We Prefer?

This is my choice of grinder for French Press. Drum roll, please!

After researching for many hours and days, I have decided on the Kitchen Aid KCG Burr Coffee Grinder.

The body of the coffee grinder is made from zinc which makes it durable.

Even though a screwdriver is needed to uncover the burrs and set the size of the grind, I am so happy with the machine as it has two glass containers: a bean hopper and a grind bin.

The 15 grind settings will keep us excited from French Press to Espresso.

I can explore various brews if I do not wish to drink French Press for a day or two. The stainless steel burrs which turn at 450 RPM keep the machine col and cling-free.
